About the Book

This book has been designed for the young beginner keyboard player, not as a tutor book, but as a supplement book. The ideas have been developed to help children in the very early stages of music tuition to read the notes in treble clef and play in various positions with the right hand. The visual attractiveness of this book may engage the child’s lively imagination and inspire learning in a fun way. The element of rhythm has been removed leaving the focus on pitch to make it less cognitively demanding. In colouring in the notes, not only is the child developing their reading of notes on the music staff, but is also developing their hand-eye coordination, an essential skill for playing any musical instrument. All these ideas have been thoroughly enjoyed by many pupils of mine and have been a very good stepping stone to reading and understanding musical notation. The keyboard seems to be an increasingly popular and accessible instrument to many young children that such a book should help an interest in reading and playing music from an early age.

About the Author

Born in 1973 (England), Katherine grew up in a very musical Yorkshire family, both parents and an elder sister being musicians themselves. She started learning the piano at the age of 7 and has loved music ever since. She reached the finals of the Yorkshire Talent Show at the age of 15 performing in Leeds Town Hall. She also played the flute as a keen amateur and was inspired to learn the bassoon in her early 20’s whilst playing flute for a local production of the Oliver Show. Within 5 years she accomplished her ATCL diploma and enjoyed some success performing as a freelance semi professional. She graduated from the Open University in 2000 with a degree in Psychology which helped her to develop a career in education, teaching for the music services. She loves to be innovative in her approach to teaching and now enjoys the freedom of teaching privately. Art is her other passion and when she finds quiet time and space for herself, she loves to be creative and inspired by the local countryside, not to mention playing the piano.
