I wake up about five hours later to find it is four in the afternoon. I am starving. The smells emanating from the kitchen are what woke me in the first place. I get up and stretch then I walk into the living room to find John passed out on the couch and Freddy in the kitchen cooking up a feast. I stand in the kitchen doorway watching him until he sees me.
He smiles weakly at me and I say, “sorry, I just cannot forget that feeling, hun.”
He says, “sit down and have some dinner. Did you fill John in?”
“Yes, I did.”
“Well I guess you will be dating him next? I see you were sleeping in his room already.”
“I am not going to date John, he is not my type. He is a good friend though and you should not write him off because he offered to let me take his room. He was being a gentleman. Do you remember how to do that Freddy? I am not trying to rip your heart out. I am telling you I do not want to change you into that monster that is hiding inside you. I have a question about that though. Do you have any friends or family in Las Vegas?”
“My grandfather lives there, why?”
“Do you have a picture of him?”
“Sure it is in my wallet.” He pulls it out and shows me the picture. It looks just like the man I saw in his mind. I cannot tell him this.
“Thank you dear. Whose father is he?”
“He is my mother's adopted father. Her real parents died when she was very young, a year or two if I remember right.”
“At least she did not have a real chance to fall in love with her parents before they died. She was lucky to have someone take her in immediately instead of going to foster care. Have you ever met him in person?”
“Yes, we used to live in Las Vegas when I was younger. Father brought us down here on grandfather's request. He is branching out his business. That is how I met John actually. He was the guy grandfather hired to reinvest our laundered money and get us more through embezzling. Why do you ask?”
“I know your grandfather as well. Since I have seen his picture I am now sure of it. I cannot remember where I saw him before though. The memory of him is fuzzy in my mind. I think it has something to do with my parents though. This is really strange. I hope it has nothing to do with their death and is just a coincidence.” I know I am lying, but it is making him feel better and I cannot bear to hurt him any more. I just have this horrible feeling I am wrong in this lye.
John walks in about this time and says, “you kids alright? Do you need more privacy?”
We both look at him and he sees we no longer need to be alone. He can see the hurt in Freddy's eyes just like I can, but I see that John is a little perplexed when he looks at me.
I shoot him a mental, what is that look for?
He replies, you don't look the same. There is something missing in your eyes. The passion is gone.
I shrug it off.
John says, “Freddy, we still have an appointment with the bar owner at seven tonight. Do you think you can handle it?”
He says, “I am sure we will do fine, but I am not going to lye to the guy about our relationship.”
I say, “I really do not think that is why he wants us to visit. He was in the bar the first time we were there. I think he wants to know why we came back. He was the older guy in the baroque clothing. The guy is strange. I think he is living in another time. I also cannot read his thoughts.”
“We have about two hours before we need to be there. Will you be ready by then? I need to get some clothes out of the room and change.” I get up and kiss him on the cheek as I walk past. Then I say, “we are still friends right?”
He says, “let me get used to not being a couple first, my lady. I will let you know.”
I say, “alright, hun.”
John just shakes his head as I leave the room.
