Pawprints on My heart

These are to give you a flavour of the poetry. FIRESIDE WOLF There's a flicker behind those eyelids as he sleeps in the fire glow His tail flicks, his paws tremble poised, he's ready to go From between his teeth, an echo of that ancient, haunting howl as once more he hears the call of his hidden, ancestral soul He races over endless plains back in the dawn of time Pulls down his prey, now long-extinct and calls the pack to dine I rattle his lead. and he comes back to modern, gentler habits, He wags his tail, my fireside wolf and we're off to annoy the rabbits BREAKING NEWS The sky has just a hint of grey, one breath before the dawn I hear a rattle from the catflap, then the touch of velvet paw You tell me your adventures, where you have been tonight the mysteries, the triumphs, how you had an awful fright I listen to your meow and chirps, understand each gentle purr your fearless explorations, how brave you were out there You tell of hunting mighty prey, of monsters in the dark the sounds and scent of moonlight, and that awful, sudden, bark I scratch behind your ears, stroke your slightly ruffled fur my intrepid correspondent how I wish I had been there Then the world bursts into life, serenades the first sunbeams and we slip down beneath the covers and drift quietly into dreams Echoes They leave stains upon my furniture and scratches everywhere and though they left so long ago I still keep finding hair So now I sit I wonder did they really leave at all Or are those only shadows in the kitchen and the hall ....
