Leaving a crimson metallic-smelling blood trail, the American Captain had crawled with the little girl on his back about twenty-five feet now. He figured that was a safe enough distance away from the icy opening to try and stand up. Slowly, painfully, agonizingly, the American Captain brought his knees up to his chest first, and then straightened his arms to push himself up. But his hands slipped in his own blood, and he came crashing down hard onto the ice once again. Methodically pushing down using his knees as support, the Captain wobbly straightened his legs and struggled to his feet with the Jewish girl clinging to his back. With a pool of vermilion blood beneath him, the Captain leaned forward and began to stagger towards the shore. By this time, the German officer was only about seven or eight feet away. He stopped and pointed his Mauser at the desperate pair. “Herr Hauptmann Ross, you have come as far as you are going to go,” said the gleeful Nazi. The American Captain looked at the Nazi and said, “You’re pretty good terrorizing children, Kraut. How are you when they come a little bigger?”

About the Author
Bernard Cenney retired from the United States Army as a Lt Colonel after more than twenty-eight years in uniform.
