They were all so adorable. All had the bluest eyes, offset by steel-gray fur. Five little balls of fur, each one cuter than the next. Nancy tried to guess which one Mama would take home. It wasn’t Nancy’s decision, which she was thankful for. She would have taken them all home.
Mama made her decision. She lifted one little bundle, looked it in the eye, and said, “This is the one I want!” She kissed the little cat on the nose and handed it to Nancy. Mama turned and walked back to the car.
Nancy looked at the kitten. What on earth was this thing? Talk about ugly. It had black fur that wasn’t even pretty. Did they scrape the hair out of a drain, Nancy wondered. At least the beast had blue eyes.
“That’s the runt of the litter,” the owner said. It figured, thought Nancy.
“We’ve been calling her Baby, since she’s so tiny.”
Nancy was holding the animal by the nape of the neck. She and Carol looked at each other, looked at the cat, looked at Mama, back to the cat.
“Can’t we at least take a cute one to go with it?” Nancy called.
“No, let’s go. That’s the one.”

Mama swears that she will never own another cat again. When her daughter, Nancy, tells her of a litter of kittens in need of a home, Mama stands firm—but still starts doing all the things a responsible cat owner does when a new cat is about to arrive. She is adamant, however, that she doesn’t want another cat.
