The Gutless Wonder is a true story of a young man faced with terrific pressures from secrets about his family. He kept this within himself and sought out the venue of playing high school football. His determination and will to never quit made it possible for him to achieve success under great physical and mental barriers that could not be understood by most everyone around him. His tragedies and accomplishments are detailed in the story and would give others a path to imitate if faced with similar situations.

Tom Rooney was chosen to tell his story of triumph over tragedy in order to keep the main character and others in the story anonymous. Also, the names of places have been changed, but the events, experiences, and memories have all been recorded to the best of the author’s recollections. An effort was made not to embellish facts but to create a feeling for the burdens that Tom Rooney carried with him throughout his story. If this book will help just one individual through the tough times they may have to face in their teenage years, it has been worth all the effort.
