At the end of the day, Michael crammed his books and homework into his backpack. I can zip up the diorama in my jacket to carry it on the bus. That way, it won’t get broken. He grinned. Joel and Robby liked it, but just wait until Jason sees it! He’s gonna freak. When Mrs. Ballou excused the class, Joel and Robby followed Michael into the hallway to look for Jason. “Yo, Chung King!” called a voice from down the hallway. It was Chuck. “Don’t call me that! I keep telling you. My name is Michael.” The boy laughed and pointed at Michael’s jacket. “Hey, whatcha got in there, Chung King?” “Nothing!” “Nothing? Come on, Chung King! Show me whatcha got in there.” He danced around Michael while patting him on the head. “Nothing? You sure?” “Get away from him,” Robby insisted. The boy clapped his hands loudly right under Michael’s nose and hip-bumped against him. “Stop it. It’s a diorama, and you’re gonna break it.” “What’s going on, you guys?” the hall monitor demanded. “Chuck’s picking on Michael, Nicole,” Joel said. Chuck glared at Joel. “Am not! I’m just teasing.” He stared at Michael, unsmiling. “Just having some fun with my little buddy here, right?” Michael swallowed. I should tell her. When Michael didn’t answer, the girl said, “Chuck, you know better than to fool around in the hallway.” She looked at Michael. “You’re new, but you need to follow the rules too, or I’ll have to put you on report.” “But Nicole, it wasn’t him—” insisted Joel. “Well, you were all involved, and if it happens again, I’ll put you all on report.” She lifted her nose in the air and adjusted the hall monitor sash across her chest. “It’s my job to see that you follow the rules.” Another boy grabbed Chuck’s arm. “Hey, come on. The bus is almost here.” Turning to Michael, he said, “Hey, kid, don’t mind Chuck; he’s only kidding around.” Michael turned his back. Yeah, right! I’d like to tell that stupid Chuck he’s not funny. He’s just a jerk!

Michael Kim is worried about making friends at his new school, until he meets Jason, a boy his age who lives in the same neighborhood and will be going to the same school. But even with a new friend, Michael faces trouble at the bus stop on the first day of school when a boy named Chuck begins calling him names. Michael is upset, even though all of the other kids encourage him to ignore the boy. Chuck's buddies tell him to quit picking on Michael, but Chuck is sure that he isn't hurting anyone. He's not a bully; he's just having fun. Sensing a problem, Mrs. Murphy, the bus driver, prods Michael and Jason to talk to her, but Michael is afraid he'll be tattling if he tells what Chuck has been doing. Besides, name calling or just scaring someone isn't that bad, is it? Michael faces a very difficult situation. He is being bullied, and he needs to figure out how to handle it. He'd like to pretend he's sick and stay home. What would you do? This book demystifies bullying for children and helps them understand what bullying behavior is. MaryAnn Milton Butterfield—inspired by her Great-Grandmother Sarah DeWolf Milton, a columnist for Boston newspapers in the mid-1800s—felt printer’s ink was in her blood and pursued writing nonfiction.
