Far to the south, a great rock plateau stood at the centre of a forest that spanned for miles in all directions. Atop the plateau sat a great city, its spiked battlements illuminated by the light of a full moon like the skeleton of some prehistoric monster. In the highest tower of the city, a woman was awoken, screaming, from her slumber. But the scream was not one of fear, but triumph. She had felt a surge of power, one that could have come from only one source: him. Normally, none were abroad at night in this city, but within an hour, five black-swathed figures slipped out of the city’s main gate and into the forest beyond. They had been given specific orders, ones their mistress expected obeyed. She claimed she had felt a disturbance of great power to the north, and that only one person could have done so. The one she had sought for eighteen years. The instructions she had given were clear: find him, and bring him, or at the least word of him back…at any cost. These were orders that could not be failed. The figures vanished into the night, heading for where their target would be.

About the Author
Luke Courtney has always enjoyed writing and telling stories about heroes and monsters since his childhood. He was inspired to write From the Ashes by walks in the Irish and Scottish countryside and his own interest in history and mythology. He lives just outside London, where in between working; he plans the next part of the story…
