As the doors of the bus opened a Drill Sargent was already screaming at them.
“Fall in! Fall in!” he was yelling.
Stefan slipped to the end of the line.
The Drill Sargent saw him. He walked down to Stefan and said, “Looks like one of you ladies have a problem getting in line.”
Stefan was baffled. Why is he calling us ladies?
“What’s your name missy?” asked the Drill Sargent.
Stefan replied, “Stefan…….
He was interrupted.
“Are you trying to say Steven?”
“No, my name is Stefan.
“When you talk to me, you call me Sir!”
“Yes Sir,” responded Stefan.”
“How do you spell that name anyway?”
“It’s spelled S t e f a n.”
“Did you forget something?”
“It’s spelled S t e f a n Sir.”
“And what does S t e f a n mean?”
“It means “crowned” Sir.
“Are you kidding me?” he asked. No, don’t answer that one. Now that we got that straightened out, what is your last name?”
“It’s Babamikyam Sir.”
“You are joking with me. Babamilk what?”
Just then the Drill Sargent walked swiftly down the line.
“Do you think something is funny missy?”
“No Sir.”
“How tall are you son?”
“I’m six foot seven inches, Sir.”
“Were you laughing?” I think you were.”
“What’s your name?”
“Demetrius Robinson Sir.”
As the Drill Sargent looked up at the new recruit he said, “I don’t need your name right now. I think I will call you Stalk. Yes, that fits you perfect.”
Stefan was about to find out all that Chris told him.
“Okay ladies, hit the ground.”
Everyone lied flat on the ground, not really sure what was coming next.
“Alright, I want twenty-five push-ups, NOW .”
As the men struggled on the fifteenth pushup the Drill Sargent noticed that Stefan was not sweating, nor did he look tired. He just stood there and watched. Stefan was done first.
“Well, get up boy. You gonna lie down there all day?”
As Stefan began to get up, he said, “No Sir.”
They waited for everyone to catch up then the Drill Sargent said, “Okay ladies, open your bags and dump your stuff in front of you. You’d be surprised what some of these know-it-all kids tries to sneak past me. But no one gets passed me with anything. He started with the far end of the line.
The men were tired after the long ride and late dinner.
“What’s your name?”
“Jamar Cooper Sir.”
“Looks like we have a rich guys here. Wow! Look at those clothes? Your daddy must have bought you everything you ever wanted. Well, don’t expect that here.”
When he approached Stefan he looked down and asked, “What is that thing with yellow ducks on it?”
“My girlfriend packed it so I didn’t forget her. I didn’t do it.”
“Really….! Well I think they would look pretty on your head.”
Stefan stood silent.
“Now, soldier, put those damn yellow ducks on your head.’
He waited for Stefan to put them on.
“You’re ducky yellow panties look good on your curly hair. By the way, what does your name mean?”
Lowly, Stefan said, “crowned”, Sir.
The Sargent yelled against Stefan’s ear.
“I don’t think the ones at the end of the line heard you. What does it mean?”
“It means “crowned!” Stefan shouted out.
“Looks like you and I are going to get along really good.”
Stefan made the mistake of saying, “Thank you Sir.”
“Did I ask you to say anything Ducky?”
“No Sir you didn’t.”
“Alright all of you put your stuff back in your bags. We don’t have time for folding the rich clothes your daddies’ bought you. Now, get them back in!”
Stefan began to take the panties off his head.
“Oh No!” yelled the Sargent.
“A crowned one should not remove his crown until he is told.”
Alright, follow me. I’ll take you to your quarters. Quack quack.”
The Drill Sargent heard a cough.
“Who is that coughing back there?”
A voice called, “It’s me Sir.”
“Oh, looks like we have someone named Me. Where are you Me? Step out so I can see you?”
As Eduardo stepped aside from the men, he was a bit scared.
“And what is your name pretty boy?”
“Eduardo Garcia Sir.”
“Are you sick?”
“No Sir!”
“Okay, let’s have no more coughing. Now follow me.”
Stalk, Demetrius and Robinson were angry at what the Drill Sargent was doing to Stefan, but they refrained themselves until they were in the barracks and the Drill Sargent left.
Stalk walked down to Stefan and said, “Hey, I’m really sorry he picked you to mess with, but don’t let it get to you.”
Stefan stood there bending- his neck to look up at the tall recruit.
“As the panties fell off, the Drill Sargent was back.
“No, no. Put them back on. We’re going to have dinner, and then you can all come back here and fold your clothes.
During dinner, the Drill Sargent came up behind Stefan.
“Alright soldier, take those damn silly things off your head.”
Stefan stared at the Sargent.
“I let you take them off. Now what’s the matter?”
Stefan had a hunch he may know his secret gift. He wasn’t told much, but he knew Stefan could do things others couldn’t.
Stefan said nothing.
The Sargent was getting edgy.
“Ok, all of you, back to the barracks.”
Four a.m. rolled around too early. The men were woke up with a heavy bang on the edge of their beds.
“Up, up, up!” yelled the Sargent.
The first week was very hard, but Stefan pushed forward and surpassed the men in their exercises and running. The Drill Sargent was impressed, but he already knew about Stefan.
