About the Book
A year ago, I was blessed to publish my first book of poems, “About My Father’s Business.” It was so well-received, and many encouraged me to continue my writing.
This 2nd edition of “About My Father’s Business” contains the writings of a “21st Century Psalmist,” so called because the words speak to the heart’s fullness, of the trials and of the discontent of everyday life, as well as the deeply rooted spiritual concerns of one’s soul.
It is intended to stir up your emotions. If you find these words strong, or hurtful, or joyful, or sad, then you are feeling what I am feeling. I know I have found solace in this 21st Century writing.
About the Author
Deacon Garnet Earl Edwards, Jr., known as the “G-Man” and “Mack” to many, earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia in 1984.
After graduating from Welch High School in the mid-seventies, though he earned a football scholarship to attend West Virginia University, he was recognized by Stanley Romanoski, West Virginia University’s track coach, as one of the premier track stars coming out of high school as a track All-American and Hall of Fame standout. After talking with the football scout, Paul Moran, it was agreed that Garnet would participate in his first spring football training camp in his freshman year and in the following years, would participate solely in the track meets through the University. He soon became an outdoor and indoor track sensation for the Mountaineers track team. In 1978 and 1979, he became Track Athlete of the Year for the State of West Virginia.
After setting records in several events for the Mountaineers track team, he was nominated to the All-American track team in 1979. Garnet’s performance on the track field led him to All-American status as well as his induction into the West Virginia University’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
Playing football and running track at WVU, along with receiving his Bachelor of Science degree, opened many doors for Garnet.
Since that time, Deacon Edwards has spent the past 23 years caring for his parents. With the presence of his daughters Leah and Sarah and his wife Julia, the fullness of his life has unfolded. After his call to the ministry in 2008, his devotion to God has become his life’s work to serve and obey.
He is a member and the Vice President of the Community of Praise Choir, McDowell County, WV under the direction of Sister Michelle Hargrave. In May 2012, Mr. Edwards was inducted into his hometown’s Sports Hall of Fame in McDowell County, West Virginia.
A humble yet determined man, he attributes his success to God and to his loving family.
