At this particular time, we had been praying with a couple for awhile about various struggles in their lives. We had seen some breakthroughs, but they were now facing a significant financial need of $3,000. We were not in a position to help someone out with an amount this large (which I must admit I was thankful for), so we prayed … and prayed. This couple has a very strong faith, so their specific request was that we pray for God to keep their checkbook full. While this sounds like a noble approach, it just did not seem very realistic to a logical person like me. There had to be a better way to come up with this money.
The morning shower is my quiet place with God. This may be because I am usually still half asleep, but more so I think it is because my mind has not yet been filled with all the distractions of the day. As I am standing in the shower, I realize that this is the day that the $3,000 is needed by this couple. It is the 11th hour, and our prayers have seemingly gone unfulfilled. So I nonchalantly remind God that He needs to keep their checkbook full today. I even throw in a sarcastic “good luck with that” just to pile on.
Then something happens that I had never experienced before – God speaks to me out loud! I audibly hear “You pay their bills, and I will keep YOUR checkbook full.” Now, it is one thing to pray for someone else’s dire financial needs, but to willingly switch places and to now have to trust God for your own situation? I had not signed up for that. So I did what any self-respecting spiritual head of the household would do – I yelled for my wife!
Praise God that Dawn is the strong woman of God that she is. She intently listened to my recitation of what had just occurred, and after only one verification that I was sure, she calmly says “If that is what God is telling you to do.” I’m not sure I actually wanted her to agree, but now it was two against one – Dawn and God against my better judgment. So we called the couple right then and told them – you can imagine the reaction!
As enjoyable as it was to tell them the good news, we were now left to face the reality of living up to our commitment. Our drive to work that morning was pretty quiet, with both of us replaying the sequence of events that had just happened. Shortly after arriving at work, my boss called me back to her office and shared that I was receiving an unplanned, unscheduled raise of – you know it – $3,000! Not only had God restored the amount we had given, but He had multiplied it by making it part of my annual salary. What better way to keep our checkbook full

About the Book
Author Jeff Rathai is a self-proclaimed skeptic and logical thinker who resisted God’s advances into his life for years. God had always been a distant, silent partner—to be feared and obeyed but certainly not loved. Personal tragedy drove Jeff even further away.
