Dealing with Loss

Four days had passed and still no word from Marcus. Cordae wanted to call Marcus to see if he was okay, if he needed anything, or just wanted to talk. But each time Cordae would decide against doing any of those things because he didn’t want to become a bother. “You’re home extremely late from school,” said Cordae’s mom. “Is everything alright?” “No!” yelled Cordae?” “Why, what happened today at school?” asked his mom. “Nothing, ABSOUTLEY nothing.” “So, if nothing is wrong, why are you yelling?” she asked. “I’m yelling because EVERYTHING went wrong!” Cordae said, crying. “Everything like what Cordae?” she said. “On recess today I had no one to talk to, play with or anything. All Marcus did was sit on the school steps and sulk. “Cordae!” “No,” explained Cordae. “Things are different between Marcus and me now that his dad is gone. It’s almost as if I don’t have a best friend anymore. We don’t walk home from school anymore, we don’t eat lunch, we don’t ride bikes, we just don’t.” “Cordae!” his mom yelled. “You cannot be serious. Do you hear yourself? For a person who was faced with this same tragedy a year and a half ago, you are being very unfair and very unrealistic. Everyone grieves differently. There’s no right way to deal with loosing a loved one. Death is by far one of the most difficult things for an adult to cope with, let alone a child.”
