Blackness Blackened blackness they view But bold beauty I see Running smoothly over Flowing, oozing as a stream of strength As they sit denigrating The grade of Negro they negate I make naïveté nil And cement their negligence as all for naught For they fought, then they fought, now I fight For the right to make night my sight Providing light to the night that frights Them to hate, to mate rage As they assume themselves sage Only to see me away to a cage But skin doesn't pin my soul within Only my mind, in kind with love My family here and those above So as they sit, I stand Poise, patience, and knowledge in hand Balled in a fist and ready to land Upon the sands With my blackness

About the Author
Alton James has been a life-long student of the arts. James incorporates every aspect of his studies into the work that he creates. Having graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor with a Bachelor's in English and minors in Music and African-American Studies, his creativity screams from the pages themselves. With his roots beginning on the Eastside of Detroit, Michigan, James invokes an array of sentiments--from melancholy, to real, to the surreal. He calls on not only his identity, but he capitalizes on his interests as well. As an educator, he has been working to cultivate a new generation of thinkers--a generation ready to change themselves, their communities, and the world at large. Through his various endeavors, James pursues his passions relentlessly. With a published album, other literary publications, a Master's in Education, and a currently pursued doctoral degree, the sky is simply the launchpad for this multitalented erudite.
