Gifts to our children The first gift that we give to our children is that of birth. Thereafter we give many more. Our goal: to make our children happy. We spare no resources when it comes to getting gifts for our children. We invest considerable time to identify the perfect gift. We rush to beat deadlines of holidays and birthdays. These material things we give are symbols of the immense love we have for our children. They signify how much we wish them happiness and satisfaction. They attest to the fact that as parents, our children's happiness is ours too. And so as the years advance, our children have much to show for the gifts we have given them over the years. Photos with favourite toys, hobbies developed from using some of these gifts, book collections, wardrobes that make a statement, log books of cars, certificates of sponsored courses and title deeds of properties. All good but do these really guarantee a lifetime of happiness? How do we give gifts that matter? In the first place, which gifts matter? The most important of gifts are things that we can neither touch nor smell and there are no certificates to confirm what we have bequeathed. They are gifts of being. Things we pass on to our children that make them live fully and enjoy the journey of life or merely exist and die. Most of the time we are not even aware that we are giving these gifts or denying them because these are gifts that we bequeath simply by example and co-existence with our children.

It is said that the best things in life are free (and indeed they are). As you consider the best of gifts for your children, I want to introduce you to gifts that will not cost a penny and that will open the fountain of happiness and unlock unlimited potential in your child. These are the things that we can give simply by being alert to the way that we live our lives and the way we raise our children, remembering that even the slightest influence goes a long way in shaping their future. You will be a present and conscious parent as you do the following: • Strive to set an example that models what you would want for your child • Encourage the cultivation of qualities that are guaranteed to ensure your child’s happiness • Invest time in being a parent to your child This piece of work will save you from seeing in hindsight what you could have and should have done to ensure your children find happiness as they grow and when they are grown. You will know the gifts that matter and give them when it matters!
