That night after supper I sat by the fireplace and looked down at my ring, I began thinking of Troy. What was he doing, how was he handling all of this. But all memories of him faded, when I caught the look of the man standing above me. “Do I need to take that?” he asked. “No,” I said as innocently as I could. He couldn’t take it. It was all I had left. I’d do most anything for him not to take it. He grazed my hair and sat down beside me. I slid down to lie on his chest; he lifted my face so I could see him. He looked deep into my eyes as if searching for something. “Why are you being like this?” he asked. “Lonely, I guess.” He kept looking at me but then accepted my answer and let go of my chin. For once I hadn’t lied. I was getting lonely, but being close to him, is that the same thing as betraying Troy, if being close could be sparing my life?
