Elijah and Colten climbed down the ladder and ran to where the whole family had stopped to take a rest. They took a moment to enjoy the first truly warm day of summer. The fragrant smell of lilacs was in the air. Butterflies floated from bloom to bloom on the large weeping cherry tree. It looked like Granny took paint and splattered the weeping tree; there were so many butterflies on it. And you could see the big fat bumble bees, buzzing about summer's early blooming flowers. When the boys reached the family, Elijah hopped on Papa's lap, and Colten climbed on Granny's lap. They were sitting on two stumps from the trees Papa had cut down last winter. Elijah squirmed and wiggled with excitement with the news he had to share. Finally, he couldn't wait any longer, and blurted out, "There is a locked secret door in the eagle's nest and Colty found a key! Can we open it?" Papa eyes squinted and said "Leave well enough alone." Granny looked down at Colten, and said softly, "Don't go looking for trouble, for sure enough it will find you."

What could it be in The Secret Door in the house of The Family Tree? Two curious boys surely would love to see. Soon they are wisked back to the magical land, why did they turn that key. Oh my where could they be? The ground sparkled like a million fire flies landed to take a rest. The air smelled sweet like watermellon on a summers day. Vines of jewels and trees with the golden nuggets dot the land. We're back, back to the magical land. What sacrifice will they make or lessons to learn when they see the blue moon.

Jean A. Vanderlinden is author and illustrator of The Secret Door and The Family Tree. She had a dream and captured it on paper and painted it with her words. She said, to read a book and let your mind soar. Her hobbies include story writing, chainsaw carving, and acrylic painting. Her latest endeavor is to bring her books to life with her chainsaw carvings of the characters in her books. She also enjoys gardening and landscaping. She lives in Two Rivers, Wisconsin with her husband, two grown children, and two grandchildren.
