Elisha was faced with making a very big and dangerous decision. His father’s steel traps were used in the forest for trapping large animals. Animals that were trapped by mistake should be freed as quickly as possible. Elisha discovered a beautiful hawk caught in one of the traps. He heard the screams before he went into the forest. In fact, he knew he was not to enter the forest without his father or another adult. Should he try to free the hawk whose leg was almost severed by the steel trap or wait for his father to return home? Elisha made the right decision because the hawk would later repay the deed by saving Elisha’s life from a very large and mean black bull. So often good deeds we do for others have a way on returning to us. It certainly was a learned lesson for Elisha and his family.

About the Author
The Author, Bud Wainscott grew up in the rural farmland of Indiana. After four years of heavy involvement in athletics in high school, he decided to pursue a college degree in elementary education at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. From there Bud began a teaching degree that would take him through many grade levels in several states. He also coached basketball and tennis for several years at the high school level. But it was in the classroom that his compassion for writing emerged. His stories were told to students to encourage them to express their thoughts. Bud continues to write and teach. His slogan in life is, "What you keep, you lose. But what you give away, is yours forever." Bud is married and resides in San Antonio, Texas. He has three married children and twelve grandchildren. *** The Illustrator, Regina Puente grew up in San Antonio, Texas. She has a twin sister and two older sisters and an older brother. She graduated from Stevens High School in 2012. Regina currently works at SEA World in San Antonio as a caricature artist and will attend college in the fall. Art has always been a fun hobby for her. Embracing her talent and using it for a good cause is creating a passion and future career.
