Just When...

I was enjoying a nice vodka and orange juice and talking to a cute boy from New York when my cell phone rang. I answered without even looking at the caller ID. “Hello,” I said trying to plug my right ear to shield the noise. “Man, Tristan, why you haven’t called me back?” It was BJ. “BJ, what do you want?” I said being short with him. “I want to see you,” he said. I could hear the desperation in his voice. “What’s wrong?” “I just need to see you. Can you come over?” he said. Every fiber in my body was telling me no, that I shouldn’t go over there, but I just couldn’t say no. “I’ll be there in a minute,” I said regretting the words as soon as they came out of my mouth. I excused myself from the cute New Yorker and headed for the front door. As I made my way through the crowd, I felt someone grab my arm. “Where do you think you’re going?” It was Eric. “Oh, Eric, sorry, but I have to do something.” “You’re on your way to see that boy,” he said. Eric had a strange look on his face. “Eric, let go of my arm, and it’s none of your business where I’m going.” “Actually, it is my business.” Eric replied. This boy has completely lost his mind. I snatched my arm away from him. “Eric, pull yourself together,” I said glaring at him as I stormed out the front door. He followed behind me. “I wouldn’t go over there if I were you!” he shouted at me. “Eric, you’re drunk! Go back in the house and leave me the hell alone!” I said as I jumped in my car and sped off. Eric had completely lost it. How many times did I have to tell him I was not interested? I was fuming by the time I pulled up to BJ’s apartment. Eric had really pissed me off. I got out of the car and stormed up to BJ’s door. I noticed a car parked across the courtyard with its headlights on. When I got out of my car the headlights went out. Probably just some kids, I thought to myself as I knocked on BJ’s door. BJ answered the door after one knock. “Oh, baby, I missed you,” he said pulling me close to him and kissing me on my neck. I resisted, pushing him away. “What’s wrong, baby?” “BJ, I can’t do this,” I said moving into the house yet out of his reach. “What can’t you do?” “This, BJ! It’s not working. You know someone has been threatening me! And I can’t be sure it’s related to you, but who else could it involve? I haven’t been seeing anyone else.” BJ’s face frowned up. The creases in his forehead bulged out, and he began pacing back and forth. “That little bitch,” he mumbled as he pounded his fist into his hand. “BJ, who you talking to and who are you calling a bitch?” I said moving past him ready to leave. He looked at me, “No…no, baby, not you,” he said running to me. “BJ, I have to go. I just wanted you to know I cannot see you anymore.” “No, don’t leave,” BJ jumped in front of me. “BJ, move!” I said trying to push my way past him. Of course, I couldn’t. He was much stronger than I was. “I said no!” BJ snapped. His face was distorted; he looked as if he was going to explode. I began to get nervous; I wasn’t for sure what he was capable of. “BJ, please move,” I said. He grabbed me by both arms. His grip was cutting off the circulation in my arm. “Not after all I’ve sacrificed! You think you’re gonna just walk out my life!” He was yelling now—spit flying from his mouth as he pronounced each word. Sweat was starting to form on his forehead. “BJ, what is wrong with you?” I insisted. I squirmed trying to get out of his grasp. BJ pushed me up against the wall. “I said you are not leaving!” he shouted. I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t believe this was happening. I continued to squirm. What was going on? Was BJ insane? I took the only recourse I could think of…I kneed him in the balls. The impact of my knee to his testicles sent him doubling over in pain. In a flash, I grabbed my keys and ran out the front door, leaving BJ lying there moaning and groaning in pain. As I ran to my car, I noticed the headlights from earlier. I heard a female voice call out, “You faggot!” The car revved up and sped passed me narrowly missing me. I jumped in my car and drove off. What was going on tonight? First, Eric acting funny, then BJ, and now someone trying to run me down. I left BJ’s apartment with a vow never to return.
