The days turned into weeks, the weeks into months, and the months into years. We eventually accepted that there was no magic cure and no sudden change, that Joel would not suddenly become the boy we wanted him to be. The passing of time resulted in a type of resignation of reality, an acceptance of the truth and no longer a fatuous belief in the dream of the transformation of our son. But as the years melded together, we began our transformation. I am not sure if the change happened suddenly or if it was a slow but deliberate altering of our unconscious preconceptions. Our acceptance and resignation of who Joel actually was became something new and exciting. We changed, and, with that, we changed our view of Joel. Instead of being an anomaly with limited gifts and peculiar behavior, Joel became a superb example of all that is good in human nature.

About the Book
This book details the process of rearing our son Joel, autistic since birth. It contains many practical suggestions for parents, teachers, and community leaders for how to deal with children and adults diagnosed as autistic. The philosophies and suggestions contained in these pages are based on the trials, joys, successes, and failures along the pathway of parenting. While the lens is through the eyes of a parent, much of the information is applicable to educators, employers, and people whose lives intersect with autism in some way.
About the Author
Robert L. Tucker, educator, author, academician, and performing musician, is currently the Dean of Music, Fine Arts and Extended Education at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX. He is married to Clairissa and is the father of three young men with the middle son being autistic. His work to help and to understand his son led to the creation of this book. He enjoys reading, running, computers, and writing music.
