Summer in Montana

Elizabeth did her best to cover her tearful face. She brushed her red hair and let it fall freely to her shoulders. Her thoughts went back to the young woman at the airport, the proud woman putting on her makeup, so sure of her beauty. She wished she could be as beautiful. She latched the blue necklace around her neck and walked into the bedroom where the beautiful green sundress was lying across the bed. She enjoyed the feel of the soft cotton fabric against her skin as she slipped into the dress. The dress fit like it was made especially for her. It was the dress that Allister had bought just for her. She looked into the mirror at her own reflection. She could still see the lost look of a small child left behind to face the world alone. The rest of the world could see a young woman dressed for an evening of fun, but only she could recognize that look of rejection. Elizabeth walked up the path leading to the party. She could hear the music and laughter coming from the guests. Elizabeth knew she would have to put on a smile and hide her true feelings. She just wanted to make her appearance and then disappear back to the safety of her cabin. Allister met Elizabeth at the patio entrance. It was obvious he had been waiting for her. “You are just in time,” Allister said. He couldn’t take his eyes off the woman who walked toward him. It was the first time he had seen Elizabeth dressed this way. The green dress fit her perfectly, showcasing her tiny waist and beautiful, soft shoulders. The dainty necklace looked at home on this girl who liked the simple things in life. She took his breath away, this girl who had entered his life and stolen his heart. He looked at Elizabeth, who had no clue about his deep feelings for her. She thought he was in love with Abby. Allister had never felt about any woman like he felt for Elizabeth Winters. Before this evening ended, she was going to know his feelings for her. He was sure she felt the same way about him, but Elizabeth, for some reason, seemed to be afraid to commit herself.
