Achieving career satisfaction is a continuous process of daily, weekly, monthly and yearly development and assessment that requires the professional to review job changes, anticipated success and overall job satisfaction. 2. To ensure that career satisfaction continues to develop, the professional should take an active role in defining and shaping what his or her dental hygiene position looks like now and in the future. 3. Great career satisfaction comes when dental hygiene professionals succeed in improving others' oral health. 4. Dental hygiene professionals must maintain a professional presence that is composed, relaxed and does not project a negative attitude. Professionals should avoid over-confidence, but maintain a presence of quiet security. The ability to be flexible is a key component of the dental hygienists' professional composure. 5. The dental hygiene professional should try to learn from every situation, good or bad, for maximum career development and satisfaction. 6. Annual career assessment and planning determines the key drivers that a professional wants to achieve in a new year. It helps him or her prioritize the goals and objectives at the top of his or her agenda. 7. To continue building upon an ideal position, the dental hygiene professional must love what he or she does, hold a great deal of passion for it, understand his or her corresponding responsibilities and continue to learn more and apply that learning to the position. Chapter 48: Dental Hygiene and Career Satisfaction - Faculty Application 1. Why is it important to make career assessment a priority and a regular process in career planning? Resist the urge to be over-confident. • Secure – do not take comments or actions personally, but assess the situation before reacting on impulse. • Dress for professional success. 3.
