Wine and blood covered the floor of the tavern, making dexterity difficult for everyone. Soon more soldiers poured in from the street. Len, suffering from a small gash in his left side and several less serious wounds, knew that he must seek an avenue of escape. His gaze swept the hall, and spying a door in the rear of the room, he darted and flung his full weight against it. As timber cracked with a corroded moan of a hinge, the latch and hinges yielded. The copper-bound door fell in with a crash with Len right behind it. As he crossed the threshold, he found, to his dismay, the passage led to an inner chamber and not to the outside as he had hoped. He cursed and wheeled to face his opponents. If he could not escape, he would yield his soul dearly, for he was filled with the stuff that drives men to great feats when faced with situations as utterly hopeless as this one.

About the Author
Robert Cook Christenson, a freelance writer and poet, has been fascinated by the fantasy writings of authors such as Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs since his childhood. Mr. Christenson was born in central Mississippi in 1954. Having graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1977, he pursued a career in the manufacturing industry. After twenty five years, Mr. Christenson settled in a small town just north of Biloxi, Mississippi and began to recapture his love for writing. While contributing to a local newspaper, as a weekly columnist, he also began to create captivating fantasy characters and stories that have received editorial acclaim. Able to visualize the characters and action with graphic realism, his readers become captivated as with no other writer. Mr. Christenson presently resides on a small ranch with his wife, Karen, their German Shepherd Dog, Bella, one cat and a goat herd. He has many other creative talents. He is a copyrighted writer of music and an accomplished guitarist. In addition to his musical pursuits, Robert is a prize winning portrait artist in the charcoal medium. His personal hobbies are music and baseball.
