What was it like then?
EIGHT DECADES is one source of insight into the bucolic life on a Kansas farm in during the Great Depression. Note that many of the things you might take for granted today were a luxury or unheard of in those days. You might learn what it’s like to have a mama skunk shoot first and let you have it right between your eyes. Share the feelings of what it might be like to be dumped from a horse nearly on top of a coiled rattlesnake. Take a stroll across the prairie to a one room schoolhouse.
In another decade of the book, try not to think too hard about what the responsibility of having a few nuclear warheads under your control might be like. Tag along as the author courts a foreign national with their marriage illegal in several states at the time. Go to the head of the class if you can understand how the author juggled an education, a career, and a family all at the same time.
The account of the author’s life is told without a lot of platitudes or quoted morals. It is left for the reader to recall there may have been an analogy there. There are no pretenses about the life and no excuses made. So, what was it like? It’s pretty much warts and all.

About the Book
Oliver Bishop presents a lighthearted romp through 80 plus years in the life of a son of the soil, from the gritty depression years to the present, to include the bucolic farm and ranch years, the competitive military years, to include a tour of Missile Combat Crew Commander.
Then to the demanding City Manager years, the political State official years, and his serene retirement years. The book is rife with little vignettes that flavor a life. As he says, "It covers many fields: corn fields, wheat fields, and hay fields."
About the Author
I have an undergraduate degree in Public Administration (cum laude), a graduate degree in Economics (magna cum laude). I have many years of administrative positions to include City Manager, State Revenue and Fiscal Advisor, commissioned officer in the military, and as a consultant in land use planning, and assisted housing.
I have always been comfortable about writing from the time I was in grade school when I wrote Science Fiction. I wrote several financial administration manuals while in State government and have continued to write short stories for my own amusement after I retired.
My wife and I now live in a suburb of Chicago where we retired, and maintain an active life of travel and social bridge, as well as reading and surfing the 'Net.'
