About the Book
Winifred, Salem’s wee witch, has just celebrated her eighth birthday in early October and her special gift was a broom made just for her by the broom master, Mr. Martin. She has been practicing her skill with this incredible aircraft hoping for an amazing solo flight on her first Halloween. Winifred’s practice flight on this mid-October night with a full Hunter’s Moon, is just as she planned from the lift off from the family cave, south to Beck’s Mill , and back into Salem’s Square and many other points of interest before she headed home by way of Crown Hill Cemetery. Just as she’s about to lower her broom for landing at the cave, her broom loses its power and Winifred manages to glide onto the driveway of a human neighbor. She discards the broom and hurries to the family cave as there are seconds away to dawn which is the magic minute she must be home. Winifred’s broom is left on the driveway to be retrieved later. Does Winifred get her broom back? Have her Halloween plans been put on hold? Who finds Winifred’s broom?
About the Author
Author, Betty A. Stanley was given the beginnings of her first children’s book a number of years ago when she discovered a strange broom in her driveway early one October morning. Her thought was this could lead to an intriguing story for children. Betty began her elementary teaching career in Missouri which is her home state, and at the time of the found broom, she was teaching in Salem, Indiana. After retirement, Betty spent time recalling childhood experiences and telling these stories to her granddaughters Amy, Ella, and Audrey. Her goal became writing her memoir, BETTY ANN STORIES. which was written especially for the girls. This experience led her to the idea of creating a story about the strange broom she had discovered years earlier. The character of Salem’s Saucy Sprite, Wee Witch Winifred fell right into place as Betty’s imagination and love of Salem and Washington County created a special story with historical importance as well as being fun to read. Local artists shared their talent with illustrations of significant sites in Salem and Washington County. Betty lives in Washington County, just outside Salem with her husband John, Lucy Dog, Maggie Cat, and Tom-Tom Cat.
