My first and only pet fashion show, slated to take twenty-eight minutes and fifty-two seconds ended up taking three full hours. The owners of a pet salon and cattery also sold apparel and accessories for the most pampered animals, from Halloween costumes to formal wear. Now, I don’t know what possesses people to dress their dogs and cats like dolls, but my own mother took part in similar oddball behavior when she was a young woman. With no children of her own (yet), she and my father acted like Patsy Lee Wong, their bluish-black Pekingese, was a six-month-old baby. In one picture that is dated April 1954, my dad is holding Patsy in his arms, proudly showing off a white dress that looked exactly like a christening gown.
