INTRODUCTION
One day last December, when my husband Scott announced for the umpteenth time that he had absolutely no idea what to get me for Christmas, I just about had the proverbial cow. “Are you kidding me? What do you mean you have no idea … um hello … we’ve been married for 23 years, for goodness sakes. You live with me every day. You know what I like! You know what I don’t like. You know my hobbies. You know my pant and blouse size. You know what I need. Ugh!” Then I proceeded to ask myself how in the world this amazingly smart man could be in this predicament. Why is it so difficult for him to buy me, the woman he knows and loves, a gift? How can he be so smart and efficient and resourceful and creative during the 11 months leading up to a gift-buying opportunity (birthday, Valentine’s Day, Christmas) and then not be able to use all these same wonderful attributes once it becomes obvious that it is time to head out to the stores for some good old-fashioned shopping and gift-buying? How does this happen?
After the smoke cleared and I was able to think clearly again (also known as 30 minutes), I asked him a few questions – questions like how he could not know what to buy me after all these years, how does he not know what I would like as a gift? His response, “I don’t know. You are so hard to buy for.” And then he gave me that look - you know the one I’m referring to because you’ve probably given the same look - the look of ‘please don’t make me go shopping. I’ll do almost anything to not have to go shopping.’ I just rolled my eyes and moved on.
