More times than I can remember, I’ve heard the term “If you want to do something badly enough, you can do it.” I believe that’s true, you can teach a nine year old kid quantum physics, if you make it interesting enough to keep his/her attention. Learning is all about attitude, if you interest someone, you can make them remember anything.

In this book, you’ll learn the BASIC order for performing the tasks of a Roughneck. As we cover these steps, I caution you “Do not mistake these pages as your company’s policies and Procedures.” This is a general and practical set of instructions. Your company’s policies may not agree with these steps. In some cases, you will skip some of the steps mentioned in this book. As technology continues to improve our tasks each day, there are steps that are taken out or put in to protect you, as an employee, and the environments as well. When you have a question about these steps and the conflict with your company’s policies, look into your company’s best practices and operations manual, or simply ask a supervisor. You may see several differences in the things that are discussed here and in your companies’ policies and procedures.

Remember this; we all begin at the same level and we choose to learn from there. As you learn each step, you will begin to finesse your own skills and become a more efficient employee. We will cover several aspects including rig move, basic rig equipment, extended rig equipment, vertical wells, horizontal wells and directional wells.
