About the Author

I was born in the west end of city of Cincinnati, Ohio, coming into the world on November 24, 1935. Mine was a family of a true Baptist father and a devoted Catholic mother. My father, who accepted my mother’s religion for his family, demanded that we become Catholics. My father’s family did not like Catholics. To them, it was a white man’s religion and a type of devil worship. They thought to be black in the Catholic Church was a sin against God and church. It took a few years for them to accept us as relatives and as part of the Cantrell family, but we finally became family. Because my grandmother was Irish, and my mother was a multiracial person, we are the fifth generation of Catholics. My children are at present the seventh generation of Catholics. We are still part of the America Catholic Church and will continue to be Catholic and tell our story of the war.
