About the Book

The idea that I needed to write my story came after we found out some interesting things about my wife's grandparents and things about my dad's family. We had a great source of information while they were alive; however, we didn't take advantage of that opportunity. Now that source of information is gone; it cannot be retrieved. It is hoped that my story will be preserved for future generations. I have made no attempt to include everything about my childhood, the experiences on the mission field, or events later in my life. This is an attempt to give an overview of my life and ministry. It is an effort to give a "why", "how", and "where." I would hope that this book will preserve my story, before it is lost for future generations, "It is no secret what God can do!"

About the Author

Marshall grew up on a farm in Kentucky. He was the seventh child of Moses and Addie Smith Phillips. This is a story of a rural, poor farm boy, being aware of God's call in his life and how that call would change his life. He had dropped out of school about two thirds through his freshman year and was out of school for six years. It is a story of how God has led from a high school dropout to graduating from Cumberland College, Williamsburg, Kentucky, earning a Bachelor's Degree from Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky, a Master's Degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. He is fluent in both English and Swahili, after spending much of his ministry in Kenya and Tanzania, East Africa. The stories in this book reflect adventures about which most of us only dream. Some stories are adventurous, some are filled with humor. As Marshall has said, "You had to have a sense of humor to survive." This book is not only an autobiography, but it is filled with interesting and exciting adventures not only in Kentucky, but in a land, and language, thousands of miles from home.
