Brother Bernie - 1 Many years ago, my old man was buried. I call my father this, at times, with affection and no disrespect intended, though some may take it that way. But I doubt he would mind in the least. Formalities and conventions, society's mores and manners, meant little--he didn't give them a second thought. For this reason, his life ended in 1950, in a small spot in southern Missouri. But this story doesn't start there, nor my involvement in it . . . The Pug and I - Sixth Grade We called him "Pug" because that's what he was, a curly-tailed dog with floppy ears and a flat nose: a pug dog--bred in China, found in most parts of the world. He entered my life the first of February . . . 1968. I was eleven years old. My African Adventure - 1 I had never been to New York City or New Jersey neither one. I was familiar with the East Coast, but south of the the Mason-Dixon Line. So, in 1983, the Sudan wasn't the only new territory traveled, but parts of this country and Europe as well. Africa, I always wanted to visit--inspired by movies; characters like Indiana Jones--traveling more adventure than good hard work. Now, at 26, I had my chance, with eight others. Boarding a plane, arriving in Princeton to meet them: The Transient Room - DAY ONE The day was hot when the bus pulled in the station, Saturday morning at 10 a.m. I got off and walked inside, glad to stretch my legs. There were lots people, waiting or eating or buying a ticket to elsehwere. I was tired, with no sleep, and drank a cup of coffee. There was an information counter, a leaflet entitled "YCWW: Young Women's Community Club," a residence for single women. I knew these places existed, but didn't know who gained entrance. I asked directions to get there. The Annals of Boreas the Cat - Introduction Cats have been identified with particular periods of time: Ancient Egyptian goddesses, medieval devils, rat killers during the bubonic plague, witches' companions in the 18th century. Boreas the cat lived during these times. He was not acquainted with a Greek philosopher or Roman Caesar, an Oriental monarch or an Indian sage. Nor did he reside in Africa, or anywhere in the New World except North America.

About the Author
Deborah Edgerton was born in Los Angeles, California on August 30, 1956, and moved with her family to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1965. She graduated from high school in 1974, and the University of Colorado in 1980, with a bachelor's degree in history. She joined Crossroads Africa in 1983, and helped build a school in the Sudan. She has lived in a number of places and worked at various jobs, including a Special Education teacher on the Navajo Reservation, graduating with a master's degree in that field. Currently, she resides in New Mexico.
