Insomnia is one of the conditions included in this book. What is insomnia? Insomnia is a common condition in which you have trouble falling or staying asleep. Approximately 60 million Americans suffer from insomnia. Insomnia tends to increase with age and affects about 40 percent women and 30 percent of men. Insomnia can lead to serious health problems. The most common symptoms of insomnia are dream-disturbed sleep, difficulty falling asleep, waking up easily, and waking up at a specific time every night. A person with insomnia may also have sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and restless legs syndrome. During the day they may also experience drowsiness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, poor memory and irritability. • Etiology and Pathology: Anxiety and excessive work can damage the heart and spleen. When the production of Qi and blood is low, they cannot nourish the heart, which can cause insomnia. Congenital weakness, sexual activity, or prolonged illness, can damage kidneys. Inadequate water from the kidneys does not allow for restraint and regulation of the heart and its temperature. The disharmony between heart and kidneys can lead to insomnia. Emotional depression causes Qi stagnation in the liver. In the long run, it generates heat and disturbs the mind and insomnia can occur. • Differentiation: Heart and Spleen Qi deficiency • Main symptoms: Dream-disturbed sleep, difficulty falling asleep, anxiety, poor memory, fatigue, loss of appetite, yellow and pale skin, pale tongue with thin coating, thready and weak pulse. • Analysis: When blood depletion of the heart and spleen occurs, there is insufficient blood to calm the mind. This causes: dream disturbed sleep, anxiety, poor memory yellow, pale tongue expression in the blood supply is less so there is no possibility of raising the upper body. Dysfunction of the stomach and spleen causes inadequate food processing and leads to anorexia. • Treatment: The Points of the Heart meridian was chosen as the main points to calm the mind and soothe the spirit of heart. Reinforcing this method will be moxibustion to strengthen the heart and spleen. The principle points are: • HT-7-Shenmen: Calms the spirit, insomnia, poor memory, and manic-depression. • SP-6-SanyinJiao: Spleen and Stomach deficiency, • Anmian (extra point): Commonly used for the treatment of insomnia as well as for mania and agitation of the heart, • Bl-15-Xinshu: Poor memory, anxiety, insomnia, excessive dreaming; back- shu point of Heart meridian, Bl-20-Pishu: lack of appetite, undigested food, is Front-Mu point of spleen. This combination reinforces the spleen and nourishes the heart.

About the Author
Robert Tran received Master of Science degrees in Computer Information System from the University of Phoenix, San Jose, California. He has been studying Chinese Medicine since 2007. Currently, he is a graduate student at the University of East West Medicine in Sunnyvale, California. He will complete the Master of Science degree program in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at the end of 2011. The Master of Science in TCM program's curriculum is designed with a solid foundation in TCM Theory and Diagnosis, Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs and Herbal Formulas, Tuina, Acupressure, Tai Ji Quan and Qigong, and advanced studies such as Traditional Chinese Internal Medicine, TCM Pediatrics, TCM Gynecology, TCM Traumatology, and TCM External Medicine. The four Chinese medical classics: Huang Di Nei Jing, Shang Han Lun, Jin Kui Yao Lue and Wen Bing are also taught during the final year. At the University of East-West Medicine, he has learned from both traditional Chinese medicine and Western medical science.
