“Listen, I told you don’t ever call my personal cell phone. Call my work phone or wait until I call you. Do you know I was with my wife coming from her doctor’s visit? She’s pregnant!” Eric screamed into the phone. Eric was talking to the mother of his secret child, Lisa Witherspoon. The one regret he wished he could take back. He’d met Lisa at one of Stomp and Clay’s Red Carpet events in 2005. Stomp and Clay was an event-planning group that only put on three events a year in Philly. Everybody who was anybody was there. Unfortunately for Eric, he met a nobody with a banging body that night. He should have heeded BBD’s song, “Poison”: “Never trust a big butt and a smile.” If he had, he wouldn’t have a 5-year-old daughter and be paying for a luxurious lifestyle for a hoodrat. Lisa played the part of a young professional who normally attended Stomp and Clay’s events - but she turned out to be a nurse’s aide who barely got her G.E.D. He wished he could turn back the clock and stop at two shots of Patron, because he never would have otherwise ended up at the Four Seasons with Lisa that night. He took two DNA tests to make sure the girl was his, and both were positive. He never knew one night of passion could cause a lifetime of misery, but Eric loved his daughter, Tosha. She was the spitting image of him. “Don’t I take care of you? Don’t I provide for you and my daughter? Who bought you that Range Rover that you drive? Who bought you that 4,000-square-foot home in Bear? I’m the reason why you don’t have to work and can still wear Gucci, Prada, Chanel, and Dolce Gabanna. You were a hoodrat when I met you and now you’re living high off the hog. What else do you want from me?” Eric was exasperated but didn’t give Lisa a chance to respond. “Look, we have an ironclad confidentiality agreement. I take care of you until Tosha is 18 and then we are done. But if you even think about saying anything to my wife or anyone for that matter, about anything, you will be living off of food stamps in the projects for the rest of your life. Don’t forget the gag order we have, Lisa. And remember, I have friends in high places who can wreck your shop if you even think about fucking with me. Do I make myself clear?” “One more thing, Lisa: I love my wife. I am not leaving my wife for you or anyone else. You and I will never be together, so get that fucking fantasy out your damn head!” Eric said as he slammed the phone on the passenger’s car seat. Eric had to get his mind straight for one of the biggest trials of his life coming up the following week. He had to be well prepared because it was going to be a media circus. “Get your shit together, Eric Jackson. This is do or die time, baby,” Eric said as he grabbed his briefcase and threw his keys to the valet. “Showtime, baby! Let’s go.”
