A Soldier's Letter About His Adventures on the Burma Road During World War II

Elmer Olson was looking through some information that his mother-in-law had kept in a folder when he discovered a letter that her brother had written to her when he was in the army during World War II. One of his tasks was to help refugees in Burma get away from the Japanese and go safely to India. Elmer was amazed that Peter was able to describe his experiences in such a complete and interesting manner. In fact, Peter’s letter was so informative that he felt that other people would like to know what it was like to try to get so many varied persons to safety under the worst of circumstances. Peter’s sister,Helen Chally, died in October of 2001. Peter died in January of 1950. This was before Elmer had ever met him. Elmer felt extremely fortunate that this letter helped him to know what Peter was like. It is obvious that he was a very caring individual and an honorable soldier who was a credit to his country. Elmer has edited another book that his daughter, Jenell, had written about her battle with breast cancer. The name of the book is “Assisted Insanity, My Fight Against Breast Cancer.” She wrote this book to inform other of the mistakes she made so they will not make the same ones.
