p>WHY DO YOU WANT YOUR CHURCH TO GROW
This was the question a pastor of one of the fastest growing church in Lagos, Nigeria was asked by the Lord. He had been praying to God for the numerical growth of his congregation. God, who is omniscient, obviously knew the motive behind this pastor’s desire for growth. According to him, the Lord told him “I know why you want the church to grow; it is because you want to be more comfortable. You know that the more people you have in your church, the more comfortable you become”.
The prayer of many pastors today is not different from the above. However, the pastor with a shepherd’s heart, especially if he or she also doubles as an evangelist would have a much purer motive. His desire is to win as many people as the Lord would permit to the church and nurture them to maturity. All the outreaches, missionary efforts, marketing campaign are geared towards adding more souls to the kingdom of God, the church, being its representative on earth. Such prayer request cannot be condemned because church growth is the heartbeat of God. My years as a pastor of a growing church provided the opportunity for me to identify with all pastors on this important subject of Church Growth. As a matter of fact, the Great Commission – Matthew 28:19 can be said to be a church growth mandate.
The challenge is not the desire for growth in the church, but the motive behind the desire. When Prophet Samuel was going to anoint Eliab, the eldest son of Jesse because of his overwhelming appearance, God stopped him saying He had tested the young man and he had failed. God is more concerned with the heart or motive behind a request than the request itself. You can desire a good thing but with a wrong motive. The reason why many of our prayers for growth had not been answered is largely due to our motives.

About the Author

He is a seasoned administrator with over sixteen (16) years experience in Church Administration and Management and has been a pastor for over twelve (12) years at Daystar Christian Centre, Lagos, Nigeria.
