I am the oldest of eight children born during the depression years. These were hard times but like our neighbors, we were a happy, devoted family. We did not miss what we never had.
Evenings I would sit next to the kerosene lamp and read to my siblings. This prepared me for my English class, entertained my siblings, and provoked me to write my own stories and poems.

LIFE’S LADDER
Some may climb life's ladder
and never reach the top.
Some may slip on weak rungs.
Some may even stop.
Some struggle to climb half-way
and discover complete content
unaware they could conquer
or become president.
If I stop to pull up others
in their challenge on the way
and encourage their climbing higher
on their ladder, day by day;
if I steady their ladder
so they are not left behind,
Iwill surmount my ladder
with joy and with peace of mind.

Words are exciting to me. Like jigsaw pieces, when properly arranged, they become a beautiful story picture of communication that can plant love in a heart, tears in the eyes, and laughter on a sad face. Words are powerful. They direct the floundering, reform the sinner, and teach scholars. Words have the ability to concoct stories, document facts, comfort another, sign a peace treaty, compose a love letter, affirm a birth or a death. Words preserve visual and hidden meanings to be discovered by the reader. Because of my fascination with words I express my interpretations over two hundred ways in my poems that comprise this book. I want my words [poems] to live on for others to enjoy, love, hate or whatever.
