As a human race everything we do in life is base on our discomfort with boredom. My study is based on some of the world’s misuse of Idle Time. Only once you are content with your boredom, will you no longer let Idle time control your life. When I say being content with your boredom I do not mean being content with doing nothing. I mean learning how to use the time when you do feel bored in a positive manor, instead of doing extra unnecessary things just to fill your idle time. Idle Time is the time spent when you are inactive or not stimulated. In this inactiveness, we go through boredom. There are two types of boredom we go through, mental and physical. Because even if you are not doing anything, if you have a strong thought in your mind you do not feel bored. It is only once you become content with your thoughts that you feel bored.
Pretend like our lives is on a graphing chart. The absolute 0 of boredom is when we go to sleep. After we wake up, we go up on the chart and coast. Now I am not saying we only go to sleep because we are bored. Your body does need sleep for you to function properly, but the time when your body chooses to shut off is very specific. Our bodies shutting down is a process. First we become inactive mundanely, in our physical. Then we become content with our thoughts to go to sleep. People only think about boredom when they are low on the chart, but if you think about life as you are living in boredom and everything you think or do is to just to fill your Idle Time; then it becomes different. All day, as a being, we try to reach high points on our boredom chart. People must remember though, we are going to come back down on the chart after whatever it is that got us up on the chart is over. So you should be mindful of the things you do to get up on the chart.
The people who get paid the most in this world are the people who fill and appeal to the most people boredom. Artist, athletes, models, and musicians all help us pass the time by taking up our boredom. This is the same reason why people want to make money. Money fills the gap of being bored. That is why it is so important to people and their lives. With money you can go to the movies, bowling, clubbing, or just traveling in general. Having money even eliminates simple stress in life like not being able to afford food, having a place to stay, or paying the bills. Majority of things in life that fills your boredom cost money. We pay to go to theme parks, paintings, tattoos, or going to the theaters. A lot of times the more entertaining something is the more expensive it is. But people who have to do something, just to be doing something all the time, either are not content enough with their own imagination to get them through the day or are trying to distract themselves from their thoughts. People subconscious discomfort of being bored drives them to do unnecessary things or take things in their lives too serious by over focusing on it. That is why some people take their relationship too serious, fraternity and sorority life, their job, and even religion. They have too much time where they are not fulfilled mentally or physically: so people take situations or objects in their lives and make it more critical just to fill the time in their lives; so they will not be bored. These are the people who over focus on material things in their lives. They learn to substitute imagination for material things to pass the time. People with good imagination have a lot of different random thoughts all day. That's why they are open minded. Being that they like to think a lot of thoughts, they will listen to anything that will make them think. It is hard to expand someone's horizon if they do not have a good imagination. They have a large discomfort with boredom so they care to listen or mentally explore possibilities of new ideas. People without good imagination, material things appeal to them more because that is what makes them think.
What people have to realize is that living life dependent on independent variables, that are outside of them, to pass the time is like a junky chasing highs. They are searching for temporary fixes to keep them from their thoughts throughout the day. These things are temporary because at any moment they can be taken out of your life. If something you have been depending on to pass the time is taken out of your life, you will be left with a feeling of emptiness in your life. A new void in your life that you will have to learn how to take up. This is when people start to evaluate themselves and find out who they are and what drives them, but then again there are times when people just pick up another temporary fix to depend on in their Idle Time to help them cope with their mental impairment. People must realize that boredom is inevitable, but what is boredom but a state of mind you hold yourself in? The message of this book is to get people to do better with their boredom or in their time that is passing. Idle Time
