Once upon a time, many years ago when Charles, Carol, and Richard were little children, they would often go to a very special farm in the hills of Pennsylvania. They would go with their mother and father to visit Uncle Frank and Aunt Bertha Fegley, and oh my, what a wonderful time they had on the farm! In the summertime, Uncle Frank would wear denim overalls with no shirt, his tanned arms and hairy chest showing around the bib. Aunt Bertha was always in the kitchen where she wore a flowered cotton bib apron over her dress. In the kitchen was a GREAT BIG SHINY stove that had a fire burning in it all the time in winter. Coal, a black stone-like substance, burned with a great heat that baked delicious pies made from apples that grew on trees out back. The kitchen always smelled delicious from the yummy food cooking in the oven. Out from the back door, behind the kitchen, was another room, a summer kitchen, with another stove which was used in the summertime keeping the heat out of the house.

About the Book
Blackie, a female dog who lived on Uncle Frank and Aunt Bertha’s farm in Quakake, Pennsylvania never had pups of her own. When a barn cat gave birth to four kittens, Blackie decided she wanted to adopt them as her babies, probably much to the chagrin of the mother cat. One by one, Blackie took the kittens to a basket by the farmhouse door where she actually nursed them as a real mother would. Miraculously, she was able to provide milk for the kittens. This heartwarming true story will delight children of all ages, and for adults it will bring back memories of a bygone time when summer days were spent enjoying simple pleasures of discovery and creative play.
About the Author
Carol Fegley Hieronymus, a native of Pennsylvania, has been living in Pompano Beach, Florida since 1968 where she taught elementary and middle school students for thirty of her thirty-five years in the classroom. Retired, she now lives with her adored six cats in her turn-of-the-century inspired home. Carol thoroughly enjoys theatre, interior design classes, books and Irish square (set) dancing.
