About the Author

Dawn Erin is an actress, writer, singer and avid equestrienne. She is a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. She can be reached by email at renegademermaid@hotmail.com. The Iron Horse is her first novel. She lives in Austin, Texas where she is “Momma” to many dogs and one American Saddlebred.

"The Iron Horse is the kind of coming-of-age story that women have always relished. Because it?s real; it genuinely reflects the female experience and the hard truths of the times. It is brutal in its honesty, and bullshit-free. Dawn Erin?s writing is as gutsy as her protagonist. The characters crackle with life force. The dialogue is note perfect. She nails setting, interior and landscape, from the gritty streets of working-man?s Lawrence, MA to the rolling, horsy hills of Appledale Farm. She is able to convey the spectrum of human foibles, clear-eyed, but through her heart. The book made me laugh out loud, relive growing-up, and remember first love.

Sunny Quinn makes it clear from the beginning. ?This is not a story about a girl who loves horses.? It?s about belief in oneself and brutal endurance. Sunny is a gifted young Saddleseat Equitation rider. She endures a childhood of Dickensian drudgery working in the family catering-truck business to pay for her own riding lessons at the Barn. The owner and head trainer notices Sunny?s natural riding talent, the fire in her belly, and ?way with horses? and offers Sunny a job mucking stalls in exchange for training, entry into the competition circuit, and her own American Saddlebred horse.

In the snooty, stick-thin, moneyed world of the sport, Sunny is made to feel overweight and under-funded. She works day and night?mucking stalls, scrubbing catering dishes, battling weight gain and sugar addiction amid piles of leftover pastries, suffering the disapproval of her eagle-eyed coach, and the violent outbursts from a stepfather who doesn?t want her to succeed at his expense. Sunny, naturally, develops performance anxiety and body issues which lead to catastrophic personal failure. ?Sunny Quinn?s mother always said her trouble started when she quit the Barn.?
