Nightshade Can Be Deadly

“Ah, ah, ah Nurse Sanders,” the receptionist said calling after Emma. “Before you leave, these flowers were delivered for you not more than fifteen minutes ago.” “Oh, they’re beautiful aren’t they?” remarked Emma. “Well, I’d say they are a bit of a peculiar combination.” “Why?” questioned Emma. “Pink poppies and purple nightshade are a lovely color choice but be very careful – purple nightshade is highly poisonous and can be deadly if ingested.” Emma recoiled a bit before picking up the flowers. She walked slowly back to her office holding the bouquet at a safe distance. “Poisonous?” she whispered. When she got to her office, she set the flowers on the desk and tore the small white envelope from its ribbon. She ripped open the corner and peeked inside. With a bit of apprehension, she slit the rest of the envelope with her forefinger and carefully pulled the small card from within. As she read the note her face turned an ash-like color. “with sympathy, love Claudia” Emma dropped the card and stood motionless. Then looking up she prayed “Father, help me. Help me to understand what is happening. What does this woman have to do with my father?” A knock at her door interrupted her.
