One day I just decided that I was not going to be a victim. I was not going to be robbed, kicked, punched, slapped, and called names anymore. And if it meant I would have to be homeless for a while, so be it, and so I was. A while turned out to be for a couple of very hard long suffering years. Still I have not turned back and I hope I never have to. I packed my bags and my children and moved on with my life. I got a section eight certificate and began looking for an apartment. I had no real money to speak of, no car, and no support. I moved to New Bedford because my voucher time was running out. I already had one extension, and it was free to move, no deposits, first or last months rent, or any fees. I didn’t have time or mind to consider the many disadvantages that I now face. Still there are many advantages that myself and my family enjoy. Such as a place to have a real Christmas, Easter dinner, summer barbecue, and birthday party. A place to shower, to eat, to sleep, to be warm at our convenience, to take care of, a place of our own. A place to work on our survival, in short a place to live and to grow. I do not know what our fate would be if it is snatched away. We don’t have to be chased out into the street in the middle of the night. We don’t have to share our space with 6 and 10 other families and germs. Now just when most of my struggle is overcome, I am faced with homelessness again.

About the Author
My name is Mandysia Tyree Armand Albert. I am 33 years of age, the mother of five chldren, and I currently reside in Boston(Roxbury) Massachusetts. I was born and raised in what I call a concrete concentration camp otherwise known as Bromley Heath Jamaica Plain Projects. I am of African, American, and Hatian Decent. Having been born exposed to Southern roots, Hatian heritage, and conditions of poverty, I learned poverty is a disease and it does kill. While examining my life, childhood, and upbringing I discovered, through expierience, how an A and B, Honor Roll, Perfect attendance (made it to the spelling Bee) student ends up a poor, struggling, depressed, single mother of five. I've had to explore how a little girl who used to absolutly love seeing A's, check marks, and 100% on school assignments, a little black girl who loved learning, reading, writing, imagination, ended up being a teenage parent that dropped out of the 10nth grade. How did this beautiful black Hatian princess that was raised with such pride and promise, that had dreams of being a lawyer as early as age 8 end up with a criminal record of more than ten pages. Those questions led me to my research on poverty and it's dire effects on the poor. I am using bits and pieces of my struggle to inform, reform, educate, and finally, to put an end to poverty or at the very least die having at least reduced it and leaving behind a blue print for someone else to finish the job.
