‘’……..’I don’t want to talk about this…It’s awful this constant prying into what I think and feel…It’s like…It’s like being…like being raped all over again.’ She got up from the couch into a sitting position, clasping her hands in front of her, her legs dangling over the edge. She looked at him, and then walked over to him and knelt in front of him laying her head on his lap. She made noises like crying but there were no tears. Adam did not move, did not touch her. She looked up at him knowing her had realised, then she sat back on her haunches, raised her arms and began to beat Adam’s knees with her fists. Adam did not move until she had exhausted herself and collapsed once again with her head on his knees. The tears were real this time. He stroked her head feeling the softness of her hair. He raised her up so that she was no longer touching him. The look in her eyes told him everything. ’I’ve always preferred older men,’ she said. ’I know, but I’m not your father Anna. Perhaps we could discuss that further.’ She got up and began to pace around the room, her arms wrapped around her as if she were cold…….’’

About the Book
Adam Brant is a charismatic and successful analyst, until he meets the traumatised but beautiful patient Anne Marie, with whom he falls in love and begins an illicit, passionate affair. The affair leads him to ultimate disgrace via an alcoholic and violent downfall, and her to the end he should have, but did not foresee. And then there is Adam’s former wife Shirley and her chaotic relationships with men, but especially her inexplicable inability to completely remove Adam from her life. Interspersed with Freudian theory, and insights into complex behaviours, this book leads the reader to a new and disturbing vision of human frailties inevitably encountered during life’s interactions.
About the Author
John Sugden was born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. He trained as a psychiatric and general nurse, and graduated in psychology and social research at the University of Edinburgh, qualified as a teacher at the University of Manchester, and studied for a doctoral degree at the University of Sussex. John Sugden is the author of textbooks, academic articles, a children’s book, and novels. A published and prize winning poet, he has written a verse play ’From North, From North’. In 2007, along with other members of Scarborough Poetry Workshop, he was a guest reader at Cortona, Italy, International poetry festival.
