Why can’t I move? I feel almost nothing where am I? I am not cold or hot I just can not move. I am starting to feel my face but my body and arms seem frozen in time. There seems to be a light rain touching my face and ever so slowly feeling is coming to my arms and legs. It is almost as if I have been asleep for a long time and that slow period of awaking is happening. I am cold, oh so cold, and I want to move to a warmer spot. I can feel myself pushing the earth trying to find a more comfortable place. The earth seems soft and moves with me but I am now feeling shelter and things around me and certain warmth. It is time to sleep again.
I am waking again and remember moving to a warmer spot. It was dark when I crawled my way into this shelter and now I feel a little warmth from the sun. Oh, that warmth feels good. Where am I? Who am I? I know things but can not remember anything before awaking to a body that did not work. It has started to rain again and a hard rain. I am getting wet but get some shelter from the covering around me. The covering is thick underbrush with high trees that give me some comfort. Where am I?
Thank goodness for the rain as my thirst was comforted by water dripping off the leaves into my mouth. Lots of water is what I craved and the long hard rain took care of that need. The rain stopped and I went back to sleep. I awaken later to the sound of voices near. I wanted to speak but still could not move well and found that I was frightened by something not understood. Why was I here and who could be these people. I felt like I might be going insane and wondered if I had done something wrong. I decided to stay still and rest. Surely this state I was in would go away and I would get back to normal, I thought.

About the Author
I was born in Boston before WWII.
I was adopted twice and had an unsupervised childhood and youth. I began working at the age of ten and have worked all my life. I went to college, spent four years in the military, worked in industry, went back to college, spent two and a half years in the Peace Corps in West Africa, returned to college, married and had three children, divorced after twenty years, remarried, and spent forty-two years in business. I had ten foster children for short periods of time. My wife and I retired the same day. I do genealogy and have written for over forty years. I love cooking, dance, travel, electronics, music, outdoors, and anything that simulates the mind. I walked the streets of Boston and Salem as a small boy. During low tide near Derby Wharf I spent hours by myself walking along the stony shore.
I spent many nights alone in my grandparents’ home in the country and walked deep into the woods.
I learned not to be afraid. Through my life I have traveled rivers, swamps, jungles, and back country hills and climbed mountains and countless roads alone, always feeling that someone was with me.
