Ninety Six National Historic Site is approximately 2 miles south of the present town of 96, SC. Excavations at the site began in 1972. The site is a result of the wave of park creations during the National Bicentennial in 1976. The 1,022 acres includes Old 96 Village, the Stockade Fort, the remains of Star Fort, and the siege lines dug during the Battle of Star Fort.
The Visitor Center was built in 1984 and is open from 9-5:00 daily except New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. It not only contains information on 96 and Star Fort, but it also has an exhibit gallery that displays artifacts retrieved over the years. Also, an excellent 20 minute live action film, Ninety Six: Crossroads of a Revolution, is shown upon request.
The park itself is open from daylight to dusk. Enjoy the picnic area and the historic log cabin. Walk the one-mile trail which has wayside signs that explain the reconstructed stockade fort, the site of old 96, the original 1781 earthen Star Fort, the siege works, and several historic roads. Two primitive hiking trails for bird watching and wildlife viewing lead to Star Fort Pond which is open for fishing on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from April 1- November 1.
Reenactments, Living History, and the Annual Candlelight Tour are just a few of the events held at Ninety Six Historic Site.

Patsy H. Manley is a retired South Carolina public school teacher. She taught English Composition, Literature, Chorus, and Social Studies for 35 years. She taught in Ninety Six, SC, for 22 years. She and her husband Bill have a son, Bronco, and a daughter, Christine.
