Kyla had just gotten in from seeing Queen at the county jail. As soon as she walked in the door, the phone started ringing. She looked at the caller ID: it was Cash. Kyla rolled eyes into the back of her head. She was tired of him stringing her along. The only reason she kept him around because he gave her money and always made sure she was good. “Hello,” Kyla said. “What’s up?” he said. “Nothing. Just got in from seeing Queen.” “Oh, that’s what’s up? How is she?” “She’s good. You know, holding her head, Anyway how are you?” Kyla replied, not really caring – just making conversation “I’m good. I wondered if you wanted to chill tonight?” See, I knew it, she thought. The only reason he called was to fuck. “Nah, I have a big exam tomorrow. I’ll call you tomorrow afternoon.” “Okay,” Cash said.

About the Author
Kailer Camilla Hayes was born in Jersey City, NJ on December 13, 1989. Hayes spent her childhood living with her aunt, eight children and struggled mother. The absence of her father affected Hayes greatly during her early days, causing her to feel incomplete. Growing up she watched her cousins become pregnant before the age of eighteen. Determined to break the cycle, Kailer continued her road in education. In 2008, she graduated from St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, NJ, following her enrollment in Bloomfield College where she studied Nursing. By her second year of college she began to struggle financially and could no longer attend Bloomfield College. However Kailer did not quit, by the next semester Hayes was registered at Hudson County Community College, where she is now working towards her Associates in Sociology.
