“Well, I believe we are safe now, I believe it has passed over” said George. No sooner had he gotten the words out of his mouth, roaring thunderous sounds, like a freight train-only worse- coming from the direction in which it had just gone. You never heard such noises --splinter tearing, ripping, roaring, rocks falling, the racket-unbelievable! Calliewanted to get up, but George restrained her. He pulled the quilt over theirheads. In a daze, they lay there, afraid to move, afraid of what would happen next. Silence again penetrated the air-they just lay there! It seemed forever! Pushing the quilt from over their heads, crackling popping lightening revealed itself, striking in every direction.
After a long time, George said, “Let's get out of bed”. Callie put Lois on the floor beside the bed. She began trying to get out of bed. “I can't get out, my foot is hung!” said Callie. George reassured her and said, “I am going to rise up on my side, see if that helps.” Pulling gently, then more anxiously, Callie's foot was released. When George tried to get out, “My foot is hung too!” said George.

This memoir spotlights Callie during her early years living in the country. She lives through a severe illness. As she grows older, she marries a handsome man who decides he wants to farm for a living. Living in the depression years brought about many challenges to this young couple. They have seven children in fifteen years.
Callie finds herself alone at the age of thirty six. How will she make a living for herself and her children? Relatives and friends are convinced she cannot take care of seven children living in the backwoods of Alabama so they want her to give some of the children away. As she experiences the situations in her family, she becomes more determined that she will make it. Crises such as illnesses, snake bite, a gun shot wound, a burn and polio strengthens her resolve and dependence on her loving and caring God.About the Author
Tommie Plier Mitchell resides in Randolph, Alabama. She began her pursuit of a degree in 1968 at the University of Montevallo. She also took classes at George C. Wallace. Tommie received her General Studies degree from Samford University. She has two children, Patsy Mitchell Lee and Gary Kent Mitchell. Her pride and joy is her granddaughter, Jacqueline Nicole Lee.
