The sermon Deacon Hays nervously makes his way to the pulpit, followed by the singer Barbara Harris. There is a lot of buzzing coming from the audience when she got up. Ready to sing the opening hymn she waits for Hays to announce her. The small man is shaking and sweating. He has never had to speak before so many people in his life. All is quiet in the church, as Hays scans the building. Looking from his left to right, then right to left with a daze on his face. Dropping his head repeatedly, and wiping his brow, while trying to refer to his notes without looking at them. There is a buzzing coming from the audience. The loudest whispers are from deacon's row, accompanied by those, “I told you so” stares. Hays dropped his head again. He is holding the pose for about three minutes. It looks like he was praying for the strength. Finally, he looks up, and turned his head over toward EJ. EJ gets up, and walks over toward the shaking little man. “I'm sorry,” said EJ. “I think I just missed my first cue tonight!” The audience laughs, and followed with a few amen. He placed his hand on Hays' shoulder. “Think you for being patient with me Deacon Hays! I promise you I will try not to miss another!”
