The year was 1776, the month was December, and Washington and his army had been camped on the western side the Delaware River in Pennsylvania for over a month. They had been on the run from their enemy for the past six months. Their enemy, the Hessians, was now on the other side of the river in New Jersey, the city of Trenton. The Hessians were German mercenaries working for the British Army, hired to fight against the colonial army. The Hessians were a notoriously efficient and ruthless group of soldiers. These soldiers were led by Colonel Johann Rall, a merciless man who despised the new American people. While Hessian men enjoyed the luxury of four walls and a roof, Washington’s men struggled with the cold, protected only by the fabric of their tents. Washington’s men were cold, tired, and dispirited.

Led by a mouse named George, these heroes braved harsh weather and enemies of their own; sparing absolutely nothing in dedication to their beliefs and their homes.
About the Author
Robert’s passion for history came from his father, who would spend hours telling stories and drawing pictures of historical moments with him. Robert wrote this book for his son, Charlie, and for other children. Through the vivid storytelling of a crucial moment in the Revolutionary war, he hopes to pass a love for our country’s colorful and exciting history to a new generation. Robert lives in New Jersey.
