“I’m sorry sir, but we have to ask that the guests now take their seats as the speakers are about to begin.” The man stood tall and serious in his penguin suit.
“Yes, of course,” Valentino replied, feeling the blood drain from his face.
“May I ask your name, sir?” The waiter seemed to read the discomfort. Valentino paused a long moment knowing he would feel a fool if his name was not on the list.
Finally, in a volume not much above a whisper, “Black. Valentino Black.” He waited with baited breath, half expecting to be unkindly escorted out by two large body guards as in the movies.
“Ah, here you are. Mr. Valentino Black and guest. Table 11.” He looked at the man, stunned. A light tug at his arm brought him back. Picking his jaw up off the ground, he followed the lead of his stunning date. She did not understand his surprise, but she thought she did. “I know it isn’t the best table, but it will still be great, Valentino.” Her voice was soft and reassuring, even if she did think him a more important man than he really was.
Just as they reached their table, complete with a little name tag that read, “Valentino Black,” and began to introduce themselves, a man on stage started to speak.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for coming. We have some big news to share with you tonight, but first let us hear from our guest of honor.”
Valentino once again found himself sitting in stunned silence. “The number one real estate agent in this country, a friend and colleague, Mrs. Catrina Barringer!” The crowd clapped demurely while Valentino sat dumbfounded. He imagined the American man, who he had recently encountered, lounging on a sofa when she walked through the front door at the end of the day. Then, he thought of how it must have appeared for a wife to tell her husband that she found the steward of their flight appealing in any sense.
His daydream was cut short by the sensual tones of the woman he had gotten to know in an airplane bathroom.
