n December 2002 I found out that someone had stolen my identity, wiped out my checking and savings accounts and stacked up thousands of dollars on various credit cards in my name. I felt like it was the end of the world since my husband was on disability due to illness; my mother showed early signs of Alzheimer’s and I was her caregiver; and my youngest son was still in middle school. I was the sole wage earner.
I was devastated! How could this happen to me? I was very careful with my account information. I started getting calls from creditors to pay up or be sued for non-payment of past due balances. I had changed my account but the person was still writing checks drawn on the old account. My bank was writing letters to various department stores because I was being charged hundreds of dollars in bounced check fees. Finally, I received a letter from the California State Attorney’s office warning that I would be arrested for passing bad checks. I was at my wits end.

About the Author
Gerie Moody Major has been an advocate for the rights of women, children and the elderly. She is an officer on several non-profit boards for the homeless and abused women. She is also a dedicated United Methodist Woman and has served as President of the organization at both the Los Angeles District and local levels.
Gerie is a two year cancer survivor. In 2007 she became deathly ill and was not expected to survive. Today she is a shining example and inspiration to all who know or have heard about her; because she went from being a vegetable (totally paralyzed with no feeling in her body) to partial paralysis. Her strong faith and love of family and friends have helped to sustain her.
