Tribal Woman #14—Gussie Mae Harris I used to have a problem being around people that were so quiet. That is, until I met Mother Harris. Her daughter, Bertha and I became best friends when we taught at the same school. It wasn’t long before “Bert” (as she was called) became like a little sister to me. Mother Harris joined in and became a spiritual mother for me. I remember Mother Harris for her humble and quiet spirit, the life she lives for the Lord, and for those scrumptious cornbread dumplings she cooks in her collard greens. I used to be quite a picky eater, but when I tasted those dumplings, I fell in love with them. When I think about it, I really should have gotten that recipe. Mother Harris was a “mother away from home” for me. She was one that treated me like her children, and, to be honest about it, I felt like one of them. I think all of the family was quiet. They walked quietly, and they talked quietly. It made me feel, sometimes, like taking a cooking pot and spoon and clanging it all around the house—just to make some noise. Soon, I learned to be just as quiet as they were—that is, for a while. Later, I just couldn’t stand it again. I used to be a very impatient person. I remember the evening when I was stopped by to pick up Mother Harris and her daughter for church. They were not quite ready, and I believed in being everywhere on time. Well, I gave them about 30- (or was it 15-?) seconds. After that, I was GONE! When they came out, no one was there. I really don’t know if I ever apologized to Mother Harris and her youngest daughter for that incident, but I hope I did. Just in case I didn’t, I’ll be sure to do it before this book is published. It is my belief that Mother Harris is a spiritual giant in the sight of the Lord, and I am privileged to honor her as one of my tribal women and walk in her shadow.

About the Book
“I Walk in the Shadows of Tribal Women” came into being after thinking about the tribal mothers in Africa who served as great storytellers, mentors, and nurturers to the young ones in their country. What they spoke was “law”, and their advice was followed by both young and old. How wonderful to walk in their shadows. The author was a young girl that wanted to be loved, accepted and have positive role models in her life. She found what she needed with the love and encouragement of twenty extraordinary women. They were from various backgrounds and professions, but found the time to plant seeds that would grow and spring up into a young life. May the joy she shares, of her experiences, inspire you to share and say “Thanks”, also.
About the Author
Jennifer Waldburg is a native of Macon, GA. She received a B.S. degree from Fort Valley Statue University in Business Education. Later, she received her M.S. degree in Instructional Technology from American InterContinental University. She is presently pursuing an Ed.S. degree in Technology from Lesley University. She has been a writer most of her life. She is a published poet, song writer, and musician. Presently, she is a Computer Applications teacher at Bryan County Middle School in Pembroke, GA. She a member of the Eveninglight Reformation Church of God in Glennville, GA, where she serves as an Associate Minister and musician. She is married to Rev. Donald Waldburg and resides in Guyton, GA. She has been a mentor to youth for a number of years, and is presently creating programs that will help bring youth off the streets and into the body of Christ.
